A GOOD EFFORT
40 GUNS TO APACHE PASS (1967)
directed by William Witney
This rousing Audie Murphy
Western is typical of the genre as it existed in the sixties. The
Apaches are depicted in more or less realistic fashion and the viewer is
made to realize that they were fighting a just fight, although there are
still plenty of references to "savagery" and "massacres".
Michael Keep manages to bring depth to his portrayal of Cochise in spite
of the inherent shallowness of the part as written. He seems to project
both fierceness and humanity at the same time . . . not an easy task with
so little on-screen time.
Still, there is little here of the stature and bearing that we know the
real Cochise projected.
