THE DREGS: A ROGUE'S GALLERY
OF COCHISES -- Cont. SORRY EXCUSE FOR A COCHISE - from writers who should know better The Peacemaker (1968) - An episode of the TV series "High Chaparral" |
Cochise: Paul Fix
(b. 1901 -- d. 1983) (Nationality: American) Trivia: Best known for his role as Micah in the popular TV series, "The Rifleman". |
Typical of the entertaining
stories that made "High Chaparral" such a successful series, this saga could
hardly be said to have been based on historical fact, other than in the broad
plot fixture that placed the Cannon ranch squarely in the middle of Cochise's
stomping grounds during the height of the "Cochise Wars". Even in
that sense, individual stories varied as to how much accuracy was allowed
to creep in. Still, I was amazed when I watched this episode to find
that they had outdone themselves in managing to locate an actor for the role
of Cochise who looked nothing like the real man. For such a pivotal
character, you'd think they would have searched high and low to find someone
with physical attributes that might at least suggest someone in the
casting department had done some homework. The story gives this Cochise a fair amount of screen time (all the more reason it would have been nice to see a convincing portrayal). Missing entirely are Cochise's arrow-straight impressive physique, his handsome and sculpted facial features, and his . . . tallness. So if you like your Cochises to be round-faced, somewhat short, and decidedly less than handsome (sorry, Paul) . . . here's your man. |
